UMS Library had been established since UMS was still named IKIP Muhammadiyah in 1981. Since that day, UMS library, which opens from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., aims to do innovations by prioritizing the customers’ satisfaction that is being adjusted to the customers’ demand such as independent borrowing and independent uploading. Independent borrowing is a facility owned by the library where the students could borrow any book by bringing the book they want to borrow and a library card to the automatic machine available without having the need to see the librarian.
Furthermore, to efficiently shorten the upload time of scientific works such as undergraduate thesis, thesis, or dissertation, today the students could upload their own scientific works with validation acquired through the library.
UMS library realizes that the visitors are digital natives, in which the students who come to the library are young generations who are born on the development era of digital technology. Therefore, the library facilitates these visitors with wireless internet connection that can be accessed in the library. The library also complements its book collection, which has reached more than 40,000 book titles and the electronic version of the available books (e-book) that can be downloaded.
With three-stories building, with service facility on each floor, and almost 1000 visitors each day, the library provides a facility of library card that is not only limited to UMS academicians, but also alumni and other people who want to be a member, which is classified into two categories: (1) Anggota luar biasa (special members), in which people in general who want to access the library could register themselves as library members by paying IDR 25,000 every six months, and IDR 10,000 for UMS alumni; (2) Anggota sekali kunjung (a single-visit members), in which people in general who want to access the library could pay IDR 5,000 for each visit.
In order to ease the students’ interaction, the library also provides SMS Gateway and application for UMS library that could be downloaded into their smart phones. This facility is used to ease the students’ access to the library without having the need to come to the library, such as to lengthen time borrowing for the books they borrowed and to suggest new books to be added into the library collection. Annually, UMS library also organizes some events for the visitors, such as book review competition, essay writing, and profile writing of Muhammadiyah schools library. Besides the main library located on Campus II of UMS, there is also another two libraries in the Faculty of Medicine and Postgraduate Program.
